Tables come in a wide variety of materials, shapes, and heights dependent upon their origin, style, intended use and cost. Many tables are made of wood or wood-based products; some are made of other materials including metal and glass. Most tables are composed of a flat surface and one or more supports (legs). A table with a single, central foot is a pedestal table. Long tables often have extra legs for support.
Common design elements include:
- Top surfaces of various shapes, including rectangular, square, rounded, semi-circular or oval
- Legs arranged in two or more similar pairs. It usually has four legs. However, some tables have three legs, use a single or double heavy pedestal, or are attached to a wall.
- Heights ranging up and down from the most common 18–30 inches (46–76 cm) range, often reflecting the height of chairs or bar stools used as seating for people making use of a table, as for eating or performing various manipulations of objects resting on a table
- Sizes, from small 2-person tables to large dining room tables like a farmhouse or harvest table
- Presence or absence of drawers, shelves or other areas for storing items
- Expansion of the table surface by insertion of leaves or locking hinged drop leaf sections into a horizontal position
Table tops can be in virtually any shape, although rectangular, square, round (e.g. the round table), and oval tops are the most frequent. Others have higher surfaces for personal use while either standing or sitting on a tall stool.
Many tables have tops that can be adjusted to change their height, position, shape, or size, either with foldable, sliding or extensions parts that can alter the shape of the top.
Tables can be freestanding or designed for placement against a wall. Tables designed to be placed against a wall are known as Pier tables or console tables (French: console, “support bracket”) and may be bracket-mounted (traditionally), like a shelf, or have legs, which sometimes imitate the look of a bracket-mounted table.
When you have a smaller area here there is only space for a few, a pub table or bistro table will work well. These tables start as small as 30 inches round or square and are ideal for seating two or three. Most tables and chairs offer several custom options for each style such as stain or frame colors, wood or upholstered seats and even distressed or regular finish options. See our Dining Room Tables 101 Blog for more information and ideas about different types of tables.

There are numerous choices to make when picking out chairs. Most importantly, space limitations will determine the kind of chairs chosen for a given space. There’s also the general style of the decor in the space already, the materials the chairs are made from, cost calculations and value as well as attempts to make best use of the shape and layout of the room.
What are the different types of chairs? See our post on all the various chair types. When choosing an armchair, it’s important to focus on how it will be used and what function it will service in the home or office. Is this going to be primarily for decoration? Something people will rely on daily to sit on? Does it need to fit the aesthetic of the room it will be in, or can it be stored elsewhere or hidden out of sight, so its look and feel won’t matter as much? Finally, some people will decorate with attention to the flow of the room, which will make picking out just the right styles of armchairs all the more important. See our blog about various styles and determine which is the best fit for you.

Our expansive stool selection offers three different height options including counter, bar, and spectator height in a variety of styles. Our custom options such as fabric and finish options allow you to make the stool so that it will fit perfectly in your space.
A counter-height barstool is 24 to 26 inches tall from the floor to the top of the seat. Either height will work for a surface that measures 34 inches to 36 inches from the floor to the top of that surface. If your counter is even with your stovetop and sink area you will most likely need this particular height of stool. Don’t forget to measure to the underside of your counter if you would like arms on your stool. Some styles will not make arm stools that will fit under the counter and other styles will offer custom arm heights to accommodate any needs you may have. Counter height stools are also available in swivel and non-swivel styles as well as backless versions to fit into tight spaces.
Bar-height stools are 29 to 31 inches from the floor to the top of the seat. Any height in this range will work for a surface that measures 40 inches to 43 inches from the floor to the top of that surface. Don’t forget to measure to the underside of your bar surface if you would like arms on your stool. Some styles will not make arm stools that will fit under the bar and other styles will offer custom arm heights to accommodate any needs you may have. Bar height stools are also available in swivel and non-swivel styles as well as backless versions to fit into tight spaces.
Spectator height stools are 34 to 36 inches from the floor to the top of the seat. Any height in this range will work for a surface that measures 45 inches to 48 inches from the floor to the top of that surface. Don’t forget to measure to the underside of your surface if you would like arms on your stool. Some styles will not make arm stools that will fit under your surface and other styles will offer custom arm heights to accommodate any needs you may have. Spectator height stools are also available in swivel and non-swivel styles as well as backless versions to fit into tight spaces. Originally designed for spectators in billiard halls, these stools will provide you with a good view out of a window or across a game room. Newly constructed homes and condos are more likely to have taller counters in the kitchen.
Barstools should be chosen with consideration for the exact height of your surface, so make sure to take precise measurements. Measure from the floor to the top of the surface in order to calculate the correct seat height. If you would like a stool style with arms it is important to measure from the floor to the bottom of your surface to ensure that the stool will fit under the counter when not in use. For best comfort, there should ideally be between 9 and 12 inches of space from the top of the stool seat to the underside of the bar. If you are trying to match cabinetry or fixtures it may be beneficial to bring in a cabinet door, drawer or hardware with you. Visit Barstools & Dinettes in Raleigh for expert advice on finding the perfect stool for your individual needs.
